Waterfowl Walk at Bennett's Pond

Ever heard of a Hooded Merganser? Or a Bufflehead? As snow and ice melts, these obscure waterfowl species are some of the first to make the journey back to their northern breeding grounds. Join WNC educator and local bird enthusiast Tommy McCarthy for a guided hike along the water of Bennett’s Ponds, where we will look for and learn about some of the species that can only be found here during migration. In addition we will look and listen for Wood Ducks, a beautiful but shy species which arrives around March and stays through the spring to use Bennett’s Pond as a breeding ground. If you tend to assume every duck you see is a Mallard, this walk will change that!
Binoculars are recommended as well as supportive shoes – the trail passes through some rocky areas alongside the pond. This program is geared towards adults, although kids are still welcome.

This program is in partnership with the Ridgefield Conservation Commission and Woodcock Nature Center. Bird species observed will be added to the Ridgefield Natural Resource Inventory.
